Because of where/when I live, I learned the piri outside of the instruments’ original cultural context. Over the course of getting to know this instrument, I have nurtured a way of playing that draws focus to the piri’s incredibly diverse timbral/harmonic textures. When amplifying the piri electronically, my first instinct is to use real-time effects to mess with the piri’s textures more drastically than is possible when I am playing acoustically. I have also found a lot of joy in introducing effects that add more layers rhythmically and tonally, which at times can create the sonic illusion of me playing with another player.

I am very grateful for the support and teachings piri player and scholar gamin has given me, and for empowering me to form my own relationship with the piri.
