Consensus is an ensemble of artists who come together to create performances via Group Listening: a process that transforms creative stimuli into a structured sound piece through attentive listening, collaborative improvisation, co-composition, and verbal discussion. The core experience of any Consensus performance involves members figuring out how to make music together in real-time. The result is a blurring of boundaries between composition and improvisation, rehearsal and performance.
While a core group of committed artists have made Consensus possible, we have never been nor hope to ever be a closed ensemble with a fixed roster of members. Instead, Consensus is committed to bringing in new people with various socio-creative backgrounds to play and develop new Group Listening pieces. Consensus seeks a constant questioning and negotiation of identities and aesthetics, rather than definitions.
